SA Rugby's Scrum Law Modifications (updated January 2026):
| U10 to U16 (incl. provincial school teams) | U18 and U19 (school, club, provincial, national) | |
|---|---|---|
| Calls | Crouch, Bind, Scrum | Crouch, Bind, Set |
| Engagement | Passive, pre-bound, no hit | Active, with a reduced hit |
| Ball in | On the "Scrum" call | When the scrum is square and stationary, with no signal from the referee |
| Push | Max 1.5 m, then the contest stops | Max 1.5 m, then the contest stops |
| Turnover scrum | No | No |
At all these ages:
- Props must bind with their elbows no lower than their shoulder line.
- No deliberate wheeling. If a scrum wheels past 45°, the referee stops play and orders a new scrum, with no turnover.
- Uncontested scrums caused by a card or injury must still be played with eight players a side.
- If the packs are mismatched or unsuitable, the referee should order uncontested scrums. At U18 and U19, the World Rugby laws are applied first.
