The games committee must define restricted and unrestricted areas for every meet, not just state meets, and enforce them consistently.
- Restricted areas are for competitors in the current event, meet officials and designated personnel only. Non-competing athletes and coaches stay in coaching boxes or designated viewing areas.
- Electronic devices (Rule 4-6-6): phones, headphones and video review may be used only in unrestricted areas. An athlete who views video or uses a wireless device in a restricted area while competing (on the clock for a trial, or in a race) is disqualified from the event.
- Wearing recording devices (Rule 4-6-6c, 2026): athletes may not wear any audio or video recording device during a race or trial, or in restricted areas.
- Coaching (Rule 4-6-5): coaching from a restricted area counts as assistance, and the athlete is disqualified from the event.
State associations may have further electronic device policies.
