The NFHS approved four rule changes for 2027:
- Field event reporting (3-2-3r, new): the games committee may decide whether athletes must report at the start of the field event or the start of their flight.
- Throws warm-ups (6-2-8, new): in shot put and discus, warm-up attempts must be taken from inside the circle, facing the sector. Backward, over-the-head and similar attempts are banned, so officials keep a clear line of sight to the landing area.
- Foreign substances (6-2-16b, new): bans foreign substances on shoes and in the throwing circle, and reorganizes the section for clarity.
- Vertical jump warm-ups (6-8-6): officials may give the 60-minute late-entry warm-up at a height change if the 60-minute mark has already passed or would fall during the height about to begin.
There are also editorial changes to 5-3-3 Note, 5-4-3 and 5-12-1e.
2027 points of emphasis: throws safety, athlete conduct, preventive officiating, and coaching responsibilities. That last one means coaches must know NFHS rules, state policies and games committee decisions, and pass them on to their staff and athletes.
