Since 2026 (Rule 4-6-5), an appropriate health care professional designated by the games committee may evaluate a downed competitor on the course without the athlete being disqualified, as long as no assistance is given in progressing along the course.
The NFHS 2026 interpretation (Rules 3-2-3, 4-6-5, 8-6-1) gives examples. The medical official may:
- walk alongside the athlete while talking to them (legal)
- help the athlete to their feet and judge that they can finish unassisted (legal)
But helping the athlete up and walking them toward the finish is illegal assistance.
Make sure your games committee has named its medical personnel before the meet.
