NFHS rules allow an athlete to be excused from a field event to compete in another event:
- The athlete must tell the head event judge about the conflict and get permission to be excused. If they don't, they don't get the excused protocol and can be called up and timed out of one or more trials.
- The games committee sets the time limit for excused athletes at each meet. While excused, the athlete isn't called for a trial. In vertical jumps, the games committee decides whether the bar keeps going up during that time, and what happens if the athlete doesn't return in time.
- Finals: if someone must be excused in the final round, the athlete with the best preliminary mark keeps the right to take the last attempt, and can wait until excused athletes have taken their trials.
- Reporting (new 2027, Rule 3-2-3r): the games committee may decide whether field event athletes must report at the start of the event or the start of their flight.
Coaches should check the schedule for conflicts before submitting entries.
