What footwear and surfaces are required?

Risk minimization is an NFHS spirit point of emphasis for 2026-27:

• Footwear: cheerleaders must wear footwear appropriate for the activity, as specified in the NFHS Spirit Rules Book. The NFHS calls footwear an ongoing concern.
• Surfaces: practices and performances must be on surfaces suitable for spirit activities. Slick, wet or otherwise unsafe surfaces are not appropriate for cheer or dance.
• Space: areas used for spirit activities, at games and performances, must be free of debris and obstructions.

For dance teams, new Rule 3-1-3a clarifies that when footwear is required, it must be worn on both feet.
