Hockey WA junior hockey is organised by whole school year groups, not birth year. There are four competitions, each with divisions 1 to 5:
| Competition | Western Australian school years | Maximum age for players not at school (on 30 June of the winter season) |
|---|---|---|
| J 5/6 | Years 5 and 6 | 11 |
| J 7/8 | Years 7 and 8 | 13 |
| J 9/10 | Years 9 and 10 | 15 |
| J 11/12 | Years 11 and 12 | 17 |
- A school student can play in the competition for their own school year or a higher one, and is always eligible in their own age competition.
- A player in an accelerated schooling program can play in the competition that their age would place them in.
- A player who turns 19 before 1 July in the winter season cannot play in a junior competition unless Hockey WA gives permission.
- A player cannot play for two different clubs within the junior competition without a permit.
These answers come from the Hockey WA Competition Bylaws 2026 (version 2, approved by members on 9 December 2025), which cover J 5/6 to J 11/12.
