Health Canada advises:
- Water: "Drink plenty of water, before you feel thirsty." Thirst is not a reliable sign of dehydration. Drink before, during and after activity.
- Breaks: take extra water breaks in the shade and remove gear such as helmets. Do not expect usual performance.
- Clothing: loose-fitting, light-coloured, breathable fabric, and a wide-brimmed breathable hat or an umbrella for shade.
- Sun: limit sun exposure and use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen protects against UV rays but not heat. If also using insect repellent (DEET or icaridin), apply sunscreen first, then repellent.
