In technical restriction categories, tori may not:
- Grip over the shoulder. No grip where one or both hands pass over uke's shoulder or onto the back of the collar, and no throwing from such a grip. Grips on top of the shoulder (around the shoulder stripe) are fine. A waist grip is allowed for hip throws, and once one athlete takes a waist grip, the opponent may grip past the shoulder down or across the back. A grip around the neck or the back of the collar is never allowed.
- Throw from double-sleeve or reverse grips. This rules out, for example, sode-tsurikomi-goshi and reverse versions of o-goshi, seoi-nage and kata-guruma. Taking a double-sleeve grip without throwing from it is allowed, and so are same-side (cross) grips for throws such as seoi-nage and tai-otoshi.
- Drop to one or both knees at the start of a throw. A throw where tori first takes uke's weight standing and then falls is valid.
- Use sacrifice throws (sutemi-waza), such as tomoe-nage, sumi-gaeshi, uki-waza, yoko-otoshi, tani-otoshi, ura-nage or maki-komi. Rear lifting throws where tori stays standing, such as ushiro-goshi, are allowed.
