Under 9 and Under 10: modified tackling.
- Holding an opponent is allowed (the coaching table calls it a wrap tackle only).
- No pushing (fending off), bumping or barging.
- No smothering, stealing the ball or knocking it from an opponent's hands.
- No shepherding.
Under 11 and Under 12: full tackling and bumping.
- Full tackling and bumping are allowed.
- Fending off, smothering or barging are allowed.
- Stealing the ball is allowed.
Contact is introduced gradually so children learn in a safe environment. Mouthguards are strongly recommended at all levels of football, and a custom made one gives the best protection (a boil and bite one is better than none).
