The Aboriginal Coaching Program (ACP) was created and is stewarded by the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) and the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). They made it a priority to educate about, promote the value of, and establish Indigenous participation in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).
It was originally founded to provide culturally relevant professional development for coaches of First Nation, Métis or Inuit descent. It now also provides training and tools for non-Indigenous coaches working within Indigenous communities or with Indigenous participants. It is built around a cultural platform meant to engage coaches and empower them to make a positive, lasting impact in their roles and communities.
The four components:
- Aboriginal Coaching Modules (ACM): a training curriculum for Indigenous and non-Indigenous coaches reflecting Indigenous approaches, culture, values and lifestyles.
- ACM Learning Facilitator Training (ACMLFT): multi-step training for First Nations, Métis and Inuit people who want to become accredited Learning Facilitators able to lead the ACM.
- Aboriginal Apprentice Coach Program (AACP): a professional development program for First Nation, Métis and Inuit coaches.
- National Indigenous Coaching Awards: an annual event recognizing First Nation, Métis and Inuit coaches.
