Under the SARU Player Status, Player Contracts and Player Movement Regulations (which cover players aged 18 and over):
- Registered means registered with a club in a province. Registration with a club is how a player is registered with the provincial union.
- Only a currently registered player may take part in competitions organised, recognised or sanctioned by the province or SARU.
- A player may not be registered with more than one club, or in more than one province, at the same time.
- A player contracted to a province must be registered with a club in that province.
Players' details and their movements between clubs, provinces and other unions are recorded on Footprint, the central database SA Rugby and the provinces use.
These regulations bind every province, rugby body, club and player, all of whom are deemed to know them. Clubs must tell their players about them.
