Under the ECB Safeguarding Regulations (effective 24 March 2026), the Cricket Regulator's Safeguarding Team handles cases:
- It decides whether further investigation or referral to statutory agencies (such as police or children's social care) is needed.
- The Head of Safeguarding can impose an interim suspension from any or all cricket activity (playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring, holding a club role, volunteering, even attending matches) while a case is investigated. The person can ask the independent Cricket Safeguarding Panel to review it.
- The person concerned is usually told of the concerns in writing, unless the police or another agency asks that information is withheld.
- Cases are decided on the balance of probabilities, so action can be taken even where there was no criminal prosecution or a "not guilty" verdict.
- Everyone covered by the Regulations must cooperate fully with an investigation, and failing to share a safeguarding concern can itself be a breach.
- Information is kept confidential as far as possible, but is shared where needed to protect a child or adult at risk.
Your role as Club Safeguarding Officer is to report promptly and keep records secure; you are not expected to investigate or decide whether abuse has happened.
