ECB Safe Hands guidance uses the three Rs: Respond, Record, Report. Don't assume someone else will deal with it.
Respond
- Stay calm and keep your expression neutral; don't show shock or disbelief.
- Reassure the person that they are safe, and listen. Clarify details with open questions, but don't cross-examine.
- If asked to keep a secret, be honest: explain you will have to tell someone, to keep people safe.
- Take advice from your County Safeguarding Officer before discussing the concern with anyone else at the club, including the person the concern is about.
- Don't wait until you are certain before sharing the concern.
Record
- Write down what happened as soon as possible, on the ECB/Cricket Regulator Referral Form.
- Include names, dates of birth and contact details, the child's parent or carer details and whether they have been told, any visible injury, witnesses, and any police or social care incident number.
- Record exactly what you were told or saw. If unsure of a detail, say so; don't guess or add opinions.
Report
- Report to your Club or County Safeguarding Officer within one working day, or to the Cricket Regulator if they aren't available.
