The rule book lists the equipment provided for the minor officials. The chain crew uses these two items:
- Distance chain: two rods connected near the lower end by a chain so that the distance between the rods is exactly 10 yards (10 metres). The rods are made of wood or aluminum, at least 6 feet (1.8 metres) high, preferably with a distinctive marking device at the top of each rod.
- Downs box: a wooden or aluminum post with plates or a box numbered 1 to 3. The numbers must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) high and clearly visible to all officials and players.
(The same list also covers the timekeeper's flag and a stop watch or timer's clock.)
