Under the World Triathlon Competition Rules (section 2.5), your age is your age on 31 December of the year of competition. You race in the age group that includes that age:
- 15 to 19 in super sprint distance events
- 16 to 19 in sprint distance events
- 18 to 19 in standard and longer distance events
- then 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34 and so on in the same pattern
Triathlon Canada describes its age-group athletes as racing against others in their own five-year age category.
An athlete who competes in a category different from their age, in a distance in which that is not allowed, or within the 24-hour period limit, is disqualified from the events in that period. Elite athletes may not compete in age-group events in the same calendar year and the same multisport in which they gained elite status.
