Paralympics Australia's classification FAQs say athletes with one of seven impairment types recognised by the IPC can compete:
- Vision impairment
- Intellectual impairment
- Muscle weakness
- Restricted passive range of movement
- Limb deficiency or limb length difference
- Short stature
- Coordination impairments
Not every sport accepts every impairment. International Federations decide which impairments are included in their own sports, and Paralympics Australia follows federation rules. Other organisations run alternative competitions for other athletes, such as the Deaflympics, Special Olympics and the Transplant Games.
