Classification groups athletes whose impairments affect them in similar ways in their sport. It determines which athletes are eligible to compete and how they are grouped, in the way athletes are also grouped by age, gender or weight. Paralympics Australia describes it as "the foundation of Para sport competition". Within a sport, athletes are grouped by the severity of their impairment and how it affects their sport, and each sport has its own system.
- The IPC sets the Classification Code, which all federations and national organisations must follow. Federations are responsible for their own sport's rules.
- Paralympics Australia leads the Australian National Classification Program, oversees Code implementation in Australia, supports national sporting organisations and runs the national vision impairment classification system.
- National sporting organisations run each sport in Australia, apply classification rules to domestic competition and handle classifier training and education.
