Paralympics Australia says classification panels evaluate athletes in these steps:
- Medical documents: you provide documents confirming your diagnosis meets the IPC eligibility criteria. These are reviewed first, in an Eligibility Assessment, before you see a classification panel. Difficulties caused by training are not considered.
- Physical assessment: all athletes complete medical tests, which vary by impairment type (vision, intellectual or physical).
- Technical assessment: some athletes complete sport-specific drills and skills.
- Observation during competition: some athletes are observed by classifiers while competing.
Classifiers are specialised sports officials with a medical or sport science background who have completed their federation's classifier education. They usually work in panels of two. Records may include video or photos.
