Only registered masters athletes may compete. Australian entrants must be financial members of a state or territory masters club.
- Overseas athletes may compete if they are members of an approved masters club, but are not eligible to win an Australian title. For world championships, international athletes need to compete for their country of origin for three years before completing WMA's Change of Allegiance process.
- Temporary membership: the host state or territory may offer temporary membership to non-members from that state or territory only, if a full capitation fee is paid to AMA and all other registration fees are paid. The state or territory uniform must be worn.
- Entries are online (paper entries can go to the state or territory Secretary, who enters them online). There should generally be no late entries, though the organisers may allow them and charge a fee. AMA charges an athlete administration fee at its championships.
- Insurance: public liability insurance is provided via Athletics Australia, but athletes who are not registered with their State Athletic Association are not covered by personal accident insurance.
