Who is eligible to compete at the Arctic Winter Games?
Rule- Canada
- Arctic Winter Games
- Arctic Sports
- Dene Games
- U17, U18 and Open
- 2026
- Athletes
- Whitehorse 2026
To be eligible you must:
- Live in a participating contingent: be a resident of Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta North (north of 55 degrees), Greenland, Alaska or Nunavut, or of another contingent or guest contingent approved by the AWG International Committee. The approved guest contingents are Nunavik (Quebec, Canada), Yamal-Nenets (Russia, currently suspended since March 1, 2022) and Sapmi (Finland, Norway, Sweden).
- Be a continuous resident for six months: you must have been a continuous resident of the contingent for six months before the opening day of the Games.
- Be a "Developing Athlete": you must not have represented your nation in international competition, outside the Arctic Winter Games, in the sport you compete in. Competing for your club internationally, or being on a national team without representing the nation internationally, still counts as developing.
- Meet the age rules: you must be 12 or older as of December 31 before the Games, and born in 2013 or earlier for these sports.
- Follow the rules: comply with the Arctic Winter Games rules, Staging Manual and Technical Packages, and with all the rules of your contingent.
What counts as a resident: someone who makes their permanent home in the jurisdiction, including someone temporarily absent who keeps a close connection and intends to return. A person leaving with no intention of returning is still a resident for up to 90 days after leaving. Students, people on temporary work visas, and others only temporarily living in a participating jurisdiction, who are residents of a jurisdiction not eligible to compete, are not residents and cannot compete.
