Under the SAFA Competitions Uniform Rules (Rule 31), each SAFA league match is appointed a referee, two assistant referees and, where possible, a fourth official, all holding SAFA registration cards.
Under Law 6 (2026/27) you work under the referee's direction and indicate when:
- the whole of the ball leaves the field and which team gets the corner kick, goal kick or throw-in
- a player in an offside position may be penalised
- a substitution is requested
- at penalty kicks, the goalkeeper moves off the goal line before the kick and whether the ball crosses the line
You also:
- help the referee with offences when you have a clearer view
- monitor the substitution procedure
- help inspect the field, balls and players' equipment, and keep records of time, goals and misconduct
- may enter the field to help control the 9.15 m distance
- report any serious misconduct that happened out of the other officials' view
If you interfere unduly or behave improperly, the referee will relieve you of your duties and report it.
