Under World Rugby Laws 2026 (Law 6.22):
- There is one assistant referee or touch judge on each side of the ground.
- You remain in touch (outside the touchline) except when judging a kick at goal, when you stand in in-goal, behind the goal posts.
- If you signal foul play, you stay in touch and continue your other duties until the next stoppage in play, and enter the playing area only when the referee allows.
- A match organiser may nominate a reserve assistant referee (reserve touch judge), who is situated in the perimeter area.
