SLSA's Age Managers Assessment Portfolio (v2.2, July 2024) says that to become a qualified SLS Age Manager you must:
- be a minimum of 16 years old;
- complete the online Age Manager course (or the face-to-face equivalent);
- have completed the relevant state or territory legislation check(s) for working with children;
- have completed the online Child Safe Awareness Course; and
- be a financial member of a club.
Each year you must also watch the annual Age Manager Skills Maintenance video to remain proficient.
Surf Life Saving Queensland (2024/25 update, state example) notes the Observers course is no longer a prerequisite there, because its signals, rips and currents modules are built into the Age Manager course. An earlier Queensland circular (2023/24) set the minimum age at 18 for the Under 6 and Under 7 groups; the national portfolio does not state this.
